After a powerful earthquake struck Mexico on Friday, many frightened residents near the epicenter gathered in an open field, opting to sleep outdoors or in their cars instead of returning to their damaged, unstable homes.
As a military helicopter carrying senior officials arrived to survey the quake’s destruction, the pilot lost control just before landing. Moments later, the aircraft crashed — landing on several vehicles occupied by earthquake survivors.
The crash occurred in Oaxaca, and according to the state prosecutor’s office, 14 people on the ground were killed, including at least three children. At least 21 others were injured.
Officials confirmed that Interior Secretary Alfonso Navarrete, Oaxaca Governor Alejandro Murat, and everyone else aboard the helicopter survived with only minor injuries.
